Duane Horton

Alum 2023, Fellow 2023
Judith Tannenbaum Teaching Artist Fellow

Duane is a black queer fantasy writer and educator in the Bay Area, originally from the Midwest. He believes in writing his intersection of identity into his fantasy work to widen the canon of literature. Duane works for the youth writing organization, Chapter 510, and teaches a fantasy and science fiction writing workshop for LGBTQ+ identified youth of color in Oakland. He draws upon feminist theory to create stories that align with those values which have the power to break down oppressive structures. While at Mesa Refuge, Duane worked on a short story collection that focuses on black queer characters within the fantasy genre.
