Mesa Refuge welcomes a diverse community of writers and activists who grapple with big ideas and develop solutions for intractable problems. Our residents focus on pressing issues including (but not limited to): nature and climate; economic, racial, and gender equity; social justice and restorative justice; immigration; health care access; housing; and more. We especially encourage writers of nonfiction books, audio/podcasts, and documentary film. See our alum bios and fellowships here.

Mesa Refuge welcomes residents without discrimination. We support a diverse community of writers and activists that represent a broad spectrum of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, immigration status, religion, and ability.
Our application deadline is October 2, 2026, for residencies offered in the following year. When you click the button below you will be transferred to our application on Submittable.

Alum Weeks
Offered typically in January and February, three alums share the house for a week—a short stay that will, nonetheless, be wildly productive. The same parameters apply as with our residencies: we ask that you come with a project you’re working on and respect the time, space, and quiet atmosphere that is essential for creative work. During Alum Weeks, you follow your own schedule and pace.
Mesa Refuge staff organize the groups on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a suggested residency fee of $950 to $1,500 per person. If the cost is prohibitive, please email us: supporting alums is of utmost importance to us.
If you would like to attend an Alum Week, email Noya at nkansky@mesarefuge.org. Once your reservation is confirmed, we request that you pay immediately to hold your spot.
Private Retreats
Though our calendar is mostly filled with residencies, Mesa Refuge is available a few times per year for private writing retreats. The house is well-appointed with everything you need—whether you’re planning a solo retreat or inviting others to join you. Experience first-hand why this home is a “creative incubator” for so many. Hundreds of writers have left their signatures in the closets, words of encouragement in the journals, and their mark on the world.
The house has three bedrooms and three and a half baths as well as two writing sheds in the garden (and can sleep six). It is one of the most beautiful homes in the Point Reyes area, surrounded by a mature, well-tended garden and breathtaking views of Tomales Bay.
Private Retreats Fees*:
- 4-nights: $3,040
- 7-nights: $4,970
- Cleaning fee: $275
*Discounted rate for Mesa Refuge alums
