Week five! Just two more weeks to meet our goal….and we still need your help.
Will you join us in supporting change makers like these who are working as grassroots activists and/or creating the intellectual infrastructure for movements contributing to a more sustainable and just world.
Donations of $125 and above qualify you and a friend to come to our homecoming picnic June 15 as our guests and be entered into a drawing for a complementary DIY retreat in early 2020.
This week: meet Rowen White.
Rowen White
Author and Seed Keeper from the Mohawk Community of Akwesasne
I am but one thread in a glorious tapestry of human hands tending the seed and the soil. Over the last 17 years of learning the art of seedkeeping from the cycles of the plants themselves, I have had the honor and privilege of studying with a beautiful network of mentors and in turn teaching and mentoring hundreds of seed stewards–a diverse community of empowered humans coming to learn how to re-establish relationships with the source of the very foods that nourish us every day. Following this diverse trail of seed and stories, I have come to understand more about myself, my ancestral roots, and have received the blessing to carry and keep dozens of unique heritage seeds in our baskets and bundles for our family to be nourished and to pass along to future generations.
My time at Mesa Refuge provided a creative chrysalis for me to finish an essay featured in The New Farmer’s Almanac, Volume IV: The Greater “We” and to work on my forthcoming book titled Seed Songs. The fragrance of the gardens and estuary will forever be carried in the words that flowed from pen to paper in those timeless moments in that writing cabin that has housed so many bright minds.
