Laurin Mayeno is an author, storyteller, consultant, and coach. Her children's book One of a Kind, Like Me/Único como yo, based on her nonbinary child, is used to spark conversations about gender in school districts throughout the country. It was banned in one North Carolina district, after causing a stir. Laurin has written frequently for Huffington Post about parenting an LGBTQ+ child. She has a long history of activism focused on racial justice and building support for LGBTQ+ people in their families and communities. In 1977, she was one of the first to graduate from UC Berkeley with a Bachelors in Ethnic Studies.
She went back 20 years later to earn her Masters in Public Health. At Mesa, she worked on a piece about her late husband, Wilfredo Artiga Moreno, a Salvadoran activist, who was killed in 1988 during his country’s twelve-year war at the age of 28. You can find out more about Laurin Mayeno here.
