Kimberly Stevenot is a member of the California Valley Miwok Tribe. Like the many generations of women in her family, Kimberly is a basket weaver. Her and her family’s baskets are on display in Berkeley, Oakland, Monterey, and Sacramento. She and her sister are longtime board members of the California Indian Basket Weavers Association, which protects the rights of basket weavers and their traditional gathering sites. Kimberly is also a teacher of traditional Mewuk Culture, a lecturer, and cultural demonstrator. In addition to basket weaving, she crafts jewelry styled in her peoples’ traditional regalia and is one of few native women in California who still cook traditional acorn soup, nupa, with traditional methods, using hot rocks and baskets.
