Rita earned a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Santa Barbara in 1992. She was Chair of the Women’s Studies Department at Sacramento State University for 23 years and is currently Faculty Emeritus in the departments of Women’s and Ethnic Studies. She pioneered the first national implicit bias training program presented in court improvement initiatives in over 40 states and is a nationally and internationally recognized trainer. At the Mesa Refuge she worked on a book of personal reflections of 30 years as an educator, focusing on the impact of implicit bias and systemic racism and how they result in racial disparities across all sectors of American life.
