Jim Motavalli
Alum 1998Jim Motavalli has been writing for a long time. He is author or editor of nine books, including Forward Drive: The Race to Build Clean Cars for the Future, Feeling the Heat: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Climate Change, Naked in the Woods: Joseph Knowles and the Legacy of Frontier Fakery and High Voltage: The Fast Track to Plug in the Auto Industry. His latest books are The Real Dirt on America’s Frontier Legends and The Real Dirt on America’s Frontier Outlaws.
In addition to regular contributions to The New York Times and Barron’s, Jim’s writing has appeared in Audubon, Success, Men’s Journal, AMC Outdoors, Popular Mechanics, The Nation, The Boston Globe, Philadelphia Review, Salon, Grist, The Guardian, Tomorrow Magazine, Greenwich Magazine, Sierra and many other newspapers, magazines and websites. His career includes editor and writer roles at E/The Environmental Magazine, Car Talk at NPR, Mother Nature Network and the Connecticut alternative newspaper chain of Advocates and Weeklies.
Jim hosts an eclectic music and public affairs radio program on WPKN-FM (89.5) in Bridgeport, Connecticut and publishes a music blog, Territorial Imperatives. He lectures widely and leads in-person and virtual conference panels (most recently, The Collision Conference). He lives in a semi-empty nest with his wife in Fairfield, CT, where he serves on the town’s Sustainable Fairfield Task Force.
