Irma Herrera

Alum 2022

Irma’s-solo play, Why Would I Mispronounce My Own Name?, sheds light on our prejudices and assumptions and asks us how welcoming we really are. Her more than twenty characters weave contemporary comedic insights into history lessons. Irma spent three decades as a civil rights lawyer before becoming a playwright/solo performer. Her essays and op-eds have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Ms. and other news outlets. During her time at the Mesa Refuge she worked on Class Migrant, a one-woman play which explores living in the Bay Area’s bubble of privilege while others are struggling to get by.
