Hayden Shelby

Hayden Shelby is a PhD student in City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley. She is interested in houses, apartments, neighborhoods, villages, and all the other places people call home.
Her research is about how housing is connected to larger social and economic forces. With her writing, she tries to capture how housing is also connected to the lives of individual people and families. Prior to coming to Berkeley, Hayden completed master’s degrees in City and Regional Planning and Geography at The Ohio State University, where she researched U.S. affordable housing policy and the geography of opportunity in American cities. Her doctoral research focuses on the politics of land and informal housing in urban Thailand. In previous lives she has been a Peace Corps Volunteer, a gymnastics coach, a management consultant, and a nanny. She has written about all of these things.
