Barbara Phillips

Barbara, a social justice feminist, is a former civil rights lawyer, constitutional law professor, foundation program officer, community organizer and lead plaintiff in class actions that desegregated Mississippi State agencies. A Black Southern woman, her publications include: How I Became a Civil Rights Lawyer; The Legacy of Other Social Justice Movements; and numerous articles about human rights, civil rights and philanthropy. At the Mesa Refuge, she worked on an essay intended to persuade funders and young progressives that creative engagement with the legal system is essential to advance social justice.
