Alia Malek is a former civil rights lawyer and the author of The Home That Was Our Country: A Memoir of Syria; A Country Called Amreeka: US History Re-Told Through Arab American Lives and editor of Patriot Acts: Narratives of Post 9/11 Injustices and EUROPA أوروپا: An Illustrated Introduction to Europe for Migrants and Refugees. Her reportage has appeared in the The Nation, McSweeney’s and Foreign Policy. She is a recipient of the MacDowell and NYFA fellowships and the winner of the 2016 Hiett Prize. At the Mesa, she worked on a script for a film about a Syrian refugee family in Europe, creating a new life after fleeing from war.
