Bill Carter

Bill Carter is the critically acclaimed author of three nonfiction books (“Fools Rush In”, “Red Summer” & “Boom, Bust, Boom”) and director of the award-winning documentary film Miss Sarajevo (International Monitor Award), produced by Bono. He’s a 2014 Living Now Book Awards silver medalist and 2013 AZ/NM book award winner. His critically acclaimed books have been shortlisted by critics ranging from the BBC to Nancy Pearl. ​

Carter has held more than 50 guest lectures at universities around the world discussing his opposition to the proposed Pebble Mine, and his role as a humanitarian during the Bosnian War, where he organized the satellite connections with U2 during the height of the siege. He was also involved in setting up the U2 concert in 1997 in Sarajevo. In 2009 he was recognized with honorary citizenship to the City of Sarajevo, a role typically reserved for heads of state.

Bill Carter currently teaches Documentary Studies at Northern Arizona University’s School of Communication.

Bill Carter’s latest book “Boom, Bust, Boom” is an in-depth personal exploration of the copper industry. Like his other books, “Boom, Bust, Boom” begins with a personal story and weaves its way into the global view of the topic. An outspoken opponent of the proposed Pebble Mine near Alaska’s Bristol Bay, Carter is working to help spread awareness of proposed mining developments that threaten valuable natural
resources including Smith River, the Boundary Waters Wilderness, Rosemont, Eagle Mine, Ajax Mine in B.C., among others. The new edition of “Boom, Bust, Boom” includes a new epilogue, and a new forward by author Luis Alberto Urrea.

Bill Carter has traveled to more than 70 countries and has contributed articles to publications including The Huffington Post, Rolling Stone, Men’s Journal, Outside, Gear and Spin.

He has 12 black and white photography prints in the permanent collection at the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Arizona. In 2013 he gave a keynote talk at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on the power and importance of music in armed conflicts. Bill is a member of the Warm Foundation, SEJ & the Writer’s Guild of America.
