On Muscle: The Stuff That Moves Us and Why It Matters

by Bonnie Tsui

In On Muscle, Bonnie Tsui brings her signature blend of science, culture, immersive reporting, and personal narrative to examine not just what muscles are but what they mean to us. Woven throughout are stories of Tsui’s childhood with her Chinese immigrant artist dad—a black belt in karate—who schools her from a young age in a kind of quirky, in-house Muscle Academy.

From Bonnie:

“Every day I am changed by the books I read. To receive someone else’s words is to open yourself up to worlds you have not yet imagined—that’s a kind of magic.

The first time I came to Mesa, I was pregnant with my first child, unsure of how being a parent would impact my life and identity as a writer. When I returned for the second time, it was early in a COVID-altered landscape. In the midst of seismic change, the time and space to think expansively is a true gift.”
