Total Funds Needed: $600,000

We had amazing residents at the Mesa Refuge this year and some of the wonderful writing done by our alums is shaping national dialogue, on issues such as the relationship between race and class in Heather McGhee’s The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together or Raj Patel and Rupa Marya’s book, Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice, exploring the relationship between colonialism, capitalism and health disparities, to name just two. The challenging news is that our ability to have residents, even during COVID, came to an abrupt halt when we discovered a massive roof failure, resulting in wood rot in most of the exterior walls of the house. Fortunately, we were able to address this problem before anyone was hurt, but the repairs total $600,000!

Through your generosity, we have raised much of what we need and borrowed some as well. As you can see from the pictures, the work is extensive and has taken months. The good news is that we are able to add a new, accessible bathroom, so each bedroom will now have its own bath. Making the Mesa Refuge more welcoming to people with disabilities has long been a dream, and the extent to which walls and floors had to be rebuilt meant that we could accomplish this for very little additional cost.
