Peter Barnes Long-Form Journalism Fellowship

The Peter Barnes Long-Form Journalism fellowship was created to honor Mesa Refuge founder Peter Barnes. A journalist and writer for much of his life, Peter wrote for Newsweek and the New Republic and developed a deep appreciation for long-form journalism. This kind of writing has always been central to his vision for the Mesa Refuge.

“Long articles and essays are a deep dive—investigating things that need to be exposed and looking into complex problems that require research and thought,” Peter said. “The results are inevitably radical.”

From Thomas Paine, Mark Twain and the muckrakers of the early 20th century, to contributors to the New Yorker, the N.Y. Times Magazine and Mother Jones today, this fellowship honors and supports those writing in this essential genre.

Founding donor: Robert Friedman (Mesa alum 2017).
