Janine Kovac is a former ballet dancer and software engineer who graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in cognitive science. Her first book, Brain Changer: A Mother’s Guide to Cognitive Science, chronicles her experience as the mother of twins born nearly four months premature. Her memoir Spinning: Choreography for Coming Home which chronicled the birth of twins born nearly four months before they were born, was a winner of the National Indie Excellence Awards and a semi-finalist for the Publishers Weekly’s BookLife prize. Janine has been published in Salon, Writer’s Digest, Publishers Weekly, Mothers Always Write, Redivider, Soundings East, New Ohio Review,
Jet Fuel Review, Bellingham Review, and the Santa Fe Writers Project. Janine is currently working on Proposition, a novel that follows the sex-trafficking epidemic in Oakland from the dual perspective of survivors striving to create a better world for themselves and white-savior activists oblivious to the ways they are perpetuating systemic inequality.
