Zahir Janmohamed

Zahir Janmohamed is a freelance writer based in Ahmedabad, India. He was an eye-witness to the communal riots in Gujarat, India in 2002 and he is now working on a memoir about the aftermath of the violence set in the Muslim ghetto of Juhapura. Prior to working on his book, he spent nearly a decade working in politics, most notably at Amnesty International where he was the Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa and later as a Senior Foreign Policy Aide to Congressman Keith Ellison. He most recently served as a writing fellow at the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto where he taught the Grotto’s first ever class on political writing. He has traveled to 44 countries and his articles have been published in The San Francisco Bay Guardian, The Washington Post, Outlook India, The Hindu, and Kafila. More at
