Dan Brekke

Alum 2017

Dan Brekke is a reporter and editor for KQED News, covering topics ranging from California water to the Bay Area’s transportation challenges. Dan served as an editor at the San Francisco Examiner, Wired and TechTV, and his feature reporting has appeared in Wired and The New York Times. Since joining KQED in 2007, he has shared in three SPJ Excellence in Journalism awards for explanatory journalism and breaking news. While at the Mesa Refuge, he worked on a history focusing on California and exploring the parallel evolution of salmon, human cultures and physical and cultural landscapes here, with an emphasis on considering the ways modern settlement, development and economics have upset balances struck in native California and threaten the survival of both fish and human communities.
