Refuge for Activists Fellowship

The current political climate has challenged the values of the Mesa Refuge community to an unprecedented degree. Writers, artists and activists from around the country have mobilized to respond to new policies and agendas, to question policies and to hold the administration accountable. An ongoing, steady effort by activists of all kinds has become critical, but this kind of continuous activism can take its toll on those working on the front lines.

The Mesa Refuge has a long tradition of offering residencies to change-making writers, journalists and artists who are working in the areas of the environment, human economy and social equity. While the Mesa Refuge has supported the work of activists for nearly 20 years, we believe that this moment calls for a special response. Refuge for Activists is our first residency dedicated to supporting those who need a place where they can recharge their batteries before returning to the world with renewed focus and resilience.

A Refuge for Activists fellowship at the Mesa Refuge is a true refuge—where residents rest, rejuvenate and work as they have need—and then return to the world with renewed focus and resources.

The Refuge for Activists fellowships have been funded by the Panta Rhea Foundation, the West Marin Fund and by other generous donors.
